Overview
Wisdom tooth extraction is a common oral surgery that most people will encounter at some point of their lives especially during early adulthood. These third set of molars erupt after all the adult teeth have come out which can often cause problems such as:
Partial eruption
This lists the bacteria entering around the opening of the tooth, which can lead to infection, pain, and swelling.
Misaligned eruption
Gums, and tissue between the last molar and the erupting wisdom tooth could become pinched which can cause pain and swelling.
Angled
When the wisdom tooth grows at an angle, it pushes the other teeth which can cause pain and other more severe oral health problems.

Why are wisdom teeth removed?
The wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to come out. Usually it comes out healthy and will not need to be removed. However, it is common for these to cause problems upon eruption such as not aligning properly or affecting the gum tissues and in such case, it will need to be extracted via oral surgery. These can also come out sideways which can remain trapped under the jawbone.
Misaligned wisdom teeth can cause various issues. When it comes out partially, the opening of the tooth permits the growth of bacteria around it which could lead to infection. Some of the symptoms are stiffness, pain, swelling and fever. The pressure from the tooth coming out may cause other teeth to shift or disrupt from their current position. Many serious problems can occur such as tumors and cysts that grow around the impacted wisdom tooth. This can cause the destruction of the jawbone. It can also develop pericoronitis which is caused by the tooth surrounding the gums. When the impacted tooth is removed, you will no longer be at risk of these dental health problems.
What is the Treatment for Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth or third molars are a part of the person's natural set of teeth. They usually come out at age 17 to 25 years old. People will have a total of four wisdom teeth, although it is possible for them to have fewer. In rare cases, they can have more than four wisdom teeth, called supernumerary teeth. As the teeth start to emerge, it usually affects the surrounding teeth as they develop.
Sometimes the wisdom teeth can grow sideways which is usually an indication that it needs to be removed. Not all eruptions can cause pain or problems during development. In such situations, they may feel temporary discomfort and will stop once it has reached its final place. Problems start when there is not enough room for the tooth to erupt and start pushing against the other ones. Moreover, if it cannot come out because of overcrowding, food particles can get stuck between the teeth, and may cause infection or gingivitis.

Procedure
At the start of the treatment, your mouth will be numbed with a local anesthetic. If you are anxious, a light sedative such as laughing gas (nitrous oxide), or oral sedative may be provided.
Step 1:
If you are experiencing pain as your wisdom tooth erupts, it may need to get extracted. This type of extraction is an easy one and it involves the following steps:
Step 2:
In some extractions, your dentist might put a small incision in the gums so that the tooth can be cut into smaller pieces to make it easy to remove. The duration of the procedure will depend on the patient.
Step 3:
After the tooth has been extracted, expect to experience swelling or discomfort. This will go away after a few days.
Recovery
The ADA states the following “The blood clots that form in the tooth socket is an important part of the normal healing process. You should avoid doing things that might disturb the clot”.
Swelling
Place a cold compress on the outside of the mouth every 25 minutes. This can be done to reduce swelling, inflammation, or bruising.
Bleeding
Bleeding is normal after extraction so to keep yourself from bleeding too much and prevent dry socket you will need to keep the gauze pad on top of the affected area for at least half an hour after the surgery.
First Two Hours after Surgery
It is important that you do not eat, speak, or drink for the first two hours after the tooth/teeth has been extracted. Avoid displacing the blood clot by not using a straw when drinking. When brushing your teeth, brush and rinse your mouth gently to avoid any coagulation.
Eating softer meals
It is safe to drink water when the bleeding stops so make sure to drink lots of water to hydrate yourself. Stick to soft foods for now and do not drink carbonated beverages to prevent dislodging the blood clot.
Medications
Take pain medications and antibiotics as it is prescribed to you. Remember that if you are taking strong pain medications, you should not drive or operate heavy machinery. Do not drink alcoholic beverages while under your medication.

FAQs on Extracting Third Molars
Should I get all 4 wisdom teeth removed at once?
Even if one or two of your wisdom teeth is causing pain, getting all four of it removed is important. Moreover, multiple extractions will cost less than having them removed one by one.
Can you live without removing them?
Yes. Even if wisdom teeth have grown properly, its location makes them harder to clean. This can lead to the bacteria, thriving on that location which can cause health issues later in life.
Can getting surgery to change your face?
Wisdom teeth removal rarely has an impact on the person's facial structure regardless of how the wisdom tooth has erupted.
